I believe the stems are made by snowballing one end of a black strip (& one in reverse), the same as the next outer strips.

I drew it out in EQ7 and believe the strips are 1 inch finished with a 1 inch black border around all 4 sides, making it a 9 inch block. What did you discover with your test block? In deference to the designer, I didn't post the block although I changed the squares to logs everywhere I could.
