Look up hem clips. They are used at LQS to hold fabrics.

I bought a bunch of plastic coat hangers that said they would hold pants to air dry them NOT! but I did take all the clips off the hangers and they are what I use for the thinner fabric. I use the old bolt cardboards from Hobby Lobby.

I have used the large size paper clips, the ones that have a coating, not bare metal.

I purchased some green alligator clips at Office Depot, they had them in all colors at the time. My family knows the green ones go in the sewing room. They do have a tendency to wander around the house.
