I can envision many of these suggestions. I love the darkness and then the rebirth/growth to the light. Remove the excess batting, and leaving the ragged edges, but leaving the tulle extended for all the lighter bits, giving it an ethereal effect. I can see it clearly in my minds eye, but have no clue how to achieve it!

I wonder if you could insert scrap pieces of graduating sizes to smaller around the edge and the facing like one would edge a garment with rick rack, but using scraps. https://weallsew.com/how-to-sew-rick-rack-trim/ I'm thinking scraps that are pinked or fringed would give the impression of the roughness around the edges.
There is a youtube video for facing an uneven edge. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1LhcyyTXSk I'm thinking you would not to do it the way in the video, but probably could. I am remembering how to sew a scalloped hem by sewing a straight piece (facing) over the skirt sewing the scallop and then trim and turn. I think that one could do that with points or almost any shape you wanted.
Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do.

Watson, this is a wonderful art quilt.
I like the idea of leaving it as is and mounting it on mat board or foam core with a frame around it. Leave a border of the mat board or foam core around it. I saw a quilt recently at the VA Museum show about guitars in art. That quilt was left unbound and mounted. Here's a photo showing how it was presented:

I believe this would be best left with a jagged raw edge and mounted on a matting/frame as Ryder suggested. Doing so would surely express the (raw) emotion that your art quilt represents. Nothing pretty, nothing fancy, just vulnerably raw - and then mounted/framed beautifully - excellent work!

For a charred/burned uneven edge, I'd not choose a cotton, but a synthetic that would singe rather than burn. I also thought prairie points, but that gives such a precise edge if they are all the same size, but varied in size could possibly work for the look you're trying to achieve.
Beautiful quilt and I am anxious to see how you finish it.
