I have the one from Madam Sews and it is nice and strong, plus has a wing with a little overhand to aid in lifting it. I do use the ruler to set my needle and like it as well. Just remember that the magnetic guide is just that - a guide - not a fence. My machine's bobbin access is positioned to not leave me much magnetic space but the guide still works well.

Another DIY guide is to use a stack of post it notes. (I like the stack to be about 2-3 mm high.) Use the post-it adhesive to test out the placement; once I've got it just right, I put a piece of packing tape over the stack to make sure it is really secure. This method does mean that if I need to remove the guide, there will be a bit of sticky residue on the machine bed, but a bit of goo-gone will quickly take care of it. I haven't found that my guide gets in the way when I'm doing non-quilting sewing.
