I agree about Gutermann thread. That is what I use mostly. I've also used the JoAnn's brand of Americana and been happy with that as well. I managed to hoard some Thread Heaven and use that conditioner on my thread. Try some beeswax to help with the fraying/shredding. Much also depends on which direction you have the thread in your needle. If you put the end of the thread coming off the spool into the eye of your needle it tends to both shred and tangle less.

I inherited a spool of hand quilting thread. Perhaps some of you could give me some help finding out what the brand is. I came on a wooden cone that is about 2.5 inches high. The thread is thicker that normal piecing thread. it seldom shredded or tangled but alas, the spool had no name on it. It appears the original label pealed off. It is at least 25 years old and lovely to work with. Any ideas? I would love to purchase more.

Gutermann’s was my favourite but I don’t hand quikt much any more. It was the best for not curling back on itself and didn’t tangle as other I had tried. Even it though, would eventually fray at the needle eye if using long pieces.
