JoAnn Fabrics files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in a year

I was in the local store today and a clerk told me liquidation starts tomorrow. She said they might still get stock that was already ordered and possibly towards the end stock from other stores. So sad.

I was in Joann's today. Hard to get down the aisles due to boxes stacked up.One person at cutting table with a very long line.
Bare shelf and more boxes. Batting dept. looked like a war zone, but there were staff trying to put up stock . This one isn't suppose to close. There is a list of the different stores closing in each state.

I went to my local store today ( not on the closing list). They are no longer accepting gift cards online, no longer accept checks in store, and won't accept gift cards after the end of the month. Go use your gift cards if you have them!

I had gone to JoAnn Fabric in our area on the 13th and everyone shopping was asking about the Going Out Of business sale on the 15th. The gal said, yes they are going out of business, but where the Journal got the information that the sale would be on February 15th was not true. They have not yet been notified as to when that sale would be. But I did notice one of the employees was going around and filling a cart with items so had to wonder if they were having to remove items ahead of time to be sent to JoAnn stores that are not included in going out of business.

It's really sad what happened to Joann's, i remember when my children were small our local Joann's was filled floor to ceiling with fabric and so many smiling people, it was such a lovely place to hang out....I went in to get supplies to make a blanket for my first child, my MIL let me borrow her 1979 Kenmore sewing machine, I made the blanket for the baby....and kept getting more fabric and making more things and finally after a year my husband said "why don't we go today and buy you a sewing machine?" and the rest is history.....I will definitely miss Joann's. I refuse to set foot in Hobby Lobby, when they smuggled antiquities it was over for me and Hobby Lobby.
I will say, that I'm part of the problem, I shop mostly online, many of the shops around me are only open during the day and have very limited weekend hours and I'm not a retiree, I shop from several small businesses...online.

I am really bummed out because the JoAnns store near me is closing. I think I read that 33 stores in Michigan are closing. That’s the one store that I had a lot of fun looking around and getting sewing items from, not to mention yarn sometimes and garment fabric. I guess there won’t be any local stores for garment fabric anymore. It really just is a bummer.

I had the opportunity yesterday to go into one of the local Joann's yesterday that is closing. I have been reading and watching YouTube videos related to the bankruptcy and store closings. I was actually quite surprised. Lots of people shopping, plenty of workers, and the shelves were actually quite well stocked, no boxes waiting to be unboxed in the isles. I bought yarn, jewelry supplies. I looked in those isles and also fabric, batting, paper crafting and the faux lether/marine vinyl areas. No big spaces of empty shelves in any of the areas. I plan to go back once discounts get deeper.
I am also following the court proceedings on the Kroll website. Court adjourned near midnight last night, and will resume today. We all know about Gordon Brothers bid, but there is one more bid on the table, unfortunately it too is a liquidation company, and bids are closed as of earlier this week. Unfortunately it is looking like the stores will all be closing in time. I'm not a big quilting fabric buyer at Joann's, but they have been my go to for fleece, batting, yarn, and paper crafting supplies, so I will just have to shop elsewhere for those now.

I just checked and the one I've been complaining about near me is closing. They just remodeled in a few years back. I dislike it though even with the remodel. What a shame. I used to love to go there when my kids were little. It's changed a lot.

You may be okay with their practices, but some of us are not. YMMV."

Exactly why I won't set foot in a Hobby Lobby.
Meanwhile, I've been looking forward to visiting the JoAnn's near our DD next summer. It's clean, organized, and usually has plenty of "cutters". I sure hope it's still there in July.
Out here in the middle of nowhere, we are LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY to have two owner-operated quilt shops with amazing fabric choices. And a second quite large store with every fabric from quilt to sewing to upholstery to whatever you can think of.
