I think I have the idea and time period for what I want to do! We have a pretty big temperature range here in Illinois so there will be quite a range of colors. I'm not so sure about them and how many I will need, but having the design plan I can work on that part next.
I've seen so many really wonderful projects on this concept and would would love to see a collection of work by our talented board members, so please post your pictures. Or is it an idea or bucket list item in the back of your mind somewhere? If so, join in with the comments.
Also, I'm sure I can find it but does anyone have a good link to historical weather by location? With just highs and lows it should be easy to find, and I can parse data and download if needed

Look forward to seeing what you create, @Iceblossom !!
I've seen some finished quilts that I really like .. and some I don't care for.
I'm never sure whether it's the pattern/design used?
the colour /fabric choices used?
or even the way the weather affected the finished look?
As for getting the facts ... do you not have a government website to garner the info?
Alternatively, do you not have the weather network online?
I ask, because, here in 🍁Canada🍁, we have both where we can get the historical data, from long ago, and recently.
Good Luck!

I knew I didn't have the patience to make a block a day so I chose my year of birth.
Since that was back when dirt was new, I used three different weather sites to get all the dates, as all weren't complete.
I avoid buying fabric but as a total scrapper I had to for this project, so bought a 24 color ombre bundle of V and Company fabric which was perfect for the need. It was a strugle to make it work, but I charted the days, then charted some more and then some more, so the rare ranges had a 10 degree range, down to common temperatures having an 3 degree range .
I took my idea from someone else's full size quilt and made mine 40X40 for my loft rail. I love it. the 3 piece blocks are 1"x3" finished. I think I ended up needing 22 of the fabrics, with 44 shades from the ombres. And I started mine from date of birth or my first color is for October 28th weather

the very loast block is for my little sister, she was born on my 10th birthday.

Super cool Kalama!
Mods, if this is inappropriate, please take down -- it is not my work and I don't have a better/open link. Here is a picture of me shortly after we moved admiring a Temperature quilt at the local guild show. The next picture is an attribution to the quilter. I really liked this one, I thought the triangles gave interesting movement and I liked the color range. No real connection to my design inspiration(s) but one I thought was picture worthy
The picture is about the quilt but the taker was my husband. So in the last almost 2 years since this was taken I have lost an additional 25 pounds and quite a lot of tummy!

Here is the one I completed for 2023 using HST. The HST were 4" and I put the high temp in upper left or right with the low in the lower left or right. The quilt is 19 squares across and 22 down making 76x88. There are some squares that are a single color as the high/low fell into the same temp range. I used a range of 5 degrees to make more interesting. The month squares (post it notes) were solid color and matched the high temp adjoining them. I'm in process of making a 2024 quilt using same colors and temp ranges with a different pattern. I only have up to May finished as I haven't kept up with it every week as I did with the first one. I use the Weather Channel website for my temps the main thing is to pick 1 site to use as differnt sites can have a range of 5 - 10 degrees difference. https://weather.com/

I felt like the temperature quilts I looked at had too much information using 365 days. They had the warm colors in the middle and cooler colors at both ends.
I used the NOAA website to obtain my temperatures. (I used Excel app to keep track.)
Since the temperatures in south Texas vary so much, I recorded the highs and lows on my birthday in October, which is a very unpredictable temperature month. I went back to 1960 and arranged the columns by decades: 60s, 70s, 80s, etc. I put the day's low in the center of the square and then set on point. Same day in October ranged from 95s to 50s!!
I used my new Bernette to "write" the date, repeatedly, on one side of the binding; I "wrote" the legend/key on the corresponding color on one side of binding; I "wrote" my name across the bottom; and, finally, I labeled the decades on the top binding.

Some of the temperature quilts I've seen are very lovely, but that's because they use nice colors in a pretty design. I just don't understand what the attraction is for choosing the colors based on the temperature highs and lows for a given place in a given time period. Can someone explain that to me?

I’ve been wanting to do one of these for the longest. Congrats to those who have completed one. I have not given up on my quest to do one for 2025. I am redoing the sewing room and will tackle it soon. I’m using this pattern: https://plainsandpine.com/blogs/news...-quilt-pattern
