    Default Patterns in Magazines

Has anyone here ever had a pattern published in a magazine? I have not had the opportunity, but as someone who does doodle out a bunch of quilt designs and sometimes writes the instructions for so I can make them, it's a question that has crossed my mind. Like, if you have a pattern published in a magazine, does the magazine then own the pattern or does the designer? Are they allowed to sell the pattern elsewhere? And how does the process even work? Really, I'm just curious how the magazines get the patterns in them and the process. These are thoughts that cross my mind while doing mindless work at work

I've had knitting patterns published... you can negotiate all the variables you mentioned, such as if you are granting one time printing rights, or selling all the rights of ownership to the pattern. One of my patterns was published and then sold to BH&G, and published again by them. They sent me another check for it, which was a great surprise.

If you have patterns to submit, you can write to the magazine and ask if they are taking submissions. Good luck!

Several guild members have had patterns published in quilt magazines. Use to be dozens of quilt magazines to submit to. They sent in a picture of the quilt and asked if the magazine would like to publish the pattern. They never got rich. LOL But had bragging rights. One framed all the magazine pages of her patterns. I would too!

First, do a search to be sure it is unique, and not something someone else has alreadg published. Then make the quilt from your own pattern, send a photo and explain you are submitting it to be considered for publication, and that you have detailed, easy to follow instructions at hand that you have written.
