I am needing to replace some of my quilting tools as they are becoming too damaged/used to be accurate. Today I had a real stunner. I have a rotating mat that is 17" square that I use all of the time. It is so worn that it no longer has a good surface for cutting. I bought it around 4 years ago and thought it was expensive then at around thirty-eight dollars, I think.
I looked at the exact same rotating mat (I liked the brand) and now it is ninety-four and change at one place and seventy-four and change at another place. Needless to say, I will not be replacing it, least with that same brand. I found another brand that had some good ratings (I hope) for around 50.00, still a bit of surprised at that price. Hopefully that will last as long as the one I am replacing. But, really, that 17" square rotating mat for 100.00 plus, by the time taxes and shipping is added. I'm flabbergasted. It must have some embedded gold in there somewhere!
Don't even get me started on fabric costs!
I may need to find a cheaper hobby sooner, than later!

I watch for daily flash sales especially at Missouri Star and Quilt in a Day. The tools I need seem to always pop up on a great sale. I have the Martelli Roundabout bought on sale for $70 at Walmart online. base and mat. It's worth the price because the mat can be changed out. I don't think I'd buy it retail price now but boy it is it good. Here is a good hint. I have email notice when anything I add to watch for price drops on Amazon. When the price drops on something in my list I get an email. Some don't last long but the savings are sometimes half price. You pay for internet, make it work for you.

I agree with Scallopped...buy a regular one and glue on top, or remove from rotating device and install new one if you can see how it fastens.. l've read that a lady took an old lazy susan and glued plywood with mat o top of existing round wood top.

I haven't experienced the joy of a rotating cutting mat, yet.
After returning the first one I ordered on Amazon because it arrived bowed, I received an email from Sewing Parts Online with a 14" rotary mat for around $50. Also ordered digitally printed fabric panels 9" square. Like Spoonflower, they print after you order, whatever size you select. I ordered 9 squares for a project at $6.99/each! I will be sure to voice my opinion when they arrive!

I have a Martelli round ratating mat which I love but when I went to trim out 100's of blocks recently, they kept slipping so I used 505 spray to keep them where I needed them to be so now it's all sort of gummy. I used the spray I have to get the gummy crude off my embroidery hoops but it doesn't work quite as well. Just about that time, Martelli was having a sale on their rotating mats and parts so I ordered another cutting mat top only to have on hand. I'll use the crudey one when I need to spray 505 to keep them in place and the good one when I don't. Yes, they're expensive even on sale but I love Martelli products and always look for when they're having a sale to order.

I have an Elna rectangle cutting mat base I bought decades ago at Hancock Fabrics Store. it holds a 12 x 18 any brand mat. it's heavy and does not tip even when cutting at the end of it. I've never seen another one like it.
