Maybe a Quilt of Valor? Nothing too complicated, say a large blue mottled piece, bordered with friendship stars, then a six inch or so outer border in red. I like working with red, white, and blue, no mitchy matchy color anxiety. Easy repetitive blocks, let your mind wander while you work. Sets you up with a breather before starting your next masterpiece.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCliKDFRp2M I was amazed how many ways there are to make your own and some so easy, I will definitely try myself. Always worth checking out for future projects.

Will that work for ink-jet printers?

Jack's chain. Black background, bright solids or tone on tones.

I hardly ever order a pattern, but I just ordered A Cog in a Wheel quilt pattern from Theresa Down Under.
It's cool and seems to fulfill all your parameters. Plus, I've read through the PDF and this sucker will keep you busy for a long, long time.
Search the name on Google Images and you'll find a few with a black background.
