That really is a stunning quilt and such a clever design by Dunster. So grateful as always for the creativity shared by and inspiration to be found from the QB crew!

The blocks are 9.5" square before assembly. For the quilt I made (63X90), you need 24 A blocks; 12, B; and 34, C. The strips are all 1.5" wide. They range in length from 1.5" to 9.5". Block A is shown as only an 8.5" block, so you will have to add one more round, finishing with a 9.5" dark strip. The quilt top shown as E is about 63" square. You would obviously need fewer blocks to make the square quilt. I would suggest that you decide which size you want to make and first gather the correct number of light and dark strips that you need. You need a lot of them. I hope this helps.

These are the photos as posted by Dunster on her original thread. The blocks shown are lettered A, B and C. The quilts are D and E.

That certainly does look like it would use up a good selection of strips! I'm amazed how much like a storm at sea it looks like, especially in the thumbnails.

Great job with a perfect backing! I am glad you held onto that backing fabric until you found the perfect front for it!

I just love this! Your blocks are so pretty. I still consider myself new to quilting bc there are so many designs I still need to try. I have been wanting to try a Storm at Sea. I never wanted to make a LC until seeing this version. It would kill two birds with one stone, as the saying goes. I wouldn’t have nearly enough scraps, as mine are usually leftovers from QOV red white blue. If I would make with those then it would have to go to a vet and I’d want to make this for me. How does a person usually acquire so many of the lighter fabrics? My backgrounds have been mostly white. If I purchase yardage, how many different shades of light and how much yardage of each would you suggest? We only have Hobby Lobby here (40 miles as I’m rural) and I’m not sure what they have in whites and off whites. As my want to do list is long, who knows, by then I’ll have more pieces or already be dead.-lol Anyway, thanks for Dunster’s inspiring design and your inspiring quilt, I now have another quilt I want to make!

Ps. Forgot to ask, what are the lengths for these, as I have never made a LC? I know the widths of strips here are cut at 1.5 inch…
