It must be SPRING (cleaning). After the comments on this board about covering your stash in your insurance policy, I decided to do an inventory. Also, although my stash was folded neatly, every time I wanted something, the whole pile fell over. So first I tried cardboard for fabric boards. It worked, but not quite well enough. So I went to Home Depot and bought luan (really thin boards). One sheet is 4' x 8' and costs $9.85 each. I bought 4 sheets and my son and I cut them into 24 12x14 or 12x13 inch pieces per sheet (so 112 total). I had to lightly sand each end as they are very splintery. But it has worked very well. I measured each piece of material before I folded it on the luan and wrote the yardage on the wood. I also kept a list of yards so I can take it to the insurance co. if anything happens and show them I know how much I have. I will also take pictures for the insurance (and will post when I am done). So far I have completed the yardage, pre-cuts, batting and most of the flannel. Still have fleece, fat quarters, kits, machines, tools, already made quilts, etc. to inventory. I am loving this way of organizing my stash.

While great for keeping fabric neat, the acid in the wood will discolor the fabric over time. It was suggested on another thread to use the material that the political signs are made from, a plactic-y cardboard. (BTW, I cut plexi to be 9" then wrapped the fabric ~ each fold is 1/4 yard, I slip the plexi out for the next fabric)

Could you share this addiction with me? I love the idea but so don't have the room. About a yr ago we bought a small 1945 cottage. I have organized to the point where the "other" crafts each have a tote of their own. Oh well..

If you don't leave the plexi in the fabric does that mean you lay the fabric down and stack on top of each one? I tried that, but I have a shelf unit that is 15" deep and each of the stacks would fall over backward if you just touched them.

That is why "one size fits all" doesn't work. :lol: My bookshelves are only about 12" deep, just right for my stacks and enough to put a curtain tension rod inside along with a curtain to keep out the sun.
