When I started quilting I bought a walking foot for my Singer and hated sewing with it. It was too big, bulky and noisy. When I realized that I would be quilting for many years, I invested in a Pfaff with IDT. I love it, don't even realize it's there doing it's job.

I use my walking foot when I am putting on binding. I use my LA to quilt so my DSM is only used for piecing and bindings.

NO, don't have one. I just "help" the top fabric along by hand.

I have a walking foot for my 1980's White machine, and like it quite well. It works. I can also adjust the presser foot pressure on that one, which helps as well.

I got a walking foot for my 60 yr old Singer 15-91, and hate it! Too noisy, and I'm not convinced that it helps.

I need to find a place to keep the White machine set up, so I can just piece on the Singer and quilt on the White. Hmmmm, need a new piece of furniture? Maybe!

I have never used one but plan to try it out to see if it improves my work. I need all the help I can get. LOL

well, i cant afford one so i have never used one. dont really need it with the old machines i have. :-D

I think it's a matter of preference...and skill. It's a learning process, just like most anything new to a person. Your instructor may have attached one incorrectly, or had trouble using it & just gave up.

That said...I've used them...wasn't thrilled with those made for domestic machines.

I don't use one any more. Gave mine away... I bought it thinking that since my industial worked so great for upholstery, the generic one would be great on my Singer machine... It was ok for quilting straight lines..but for general sewing...a bust for me.
