sometimes I use sheets for the back of quilts. High thread count sheets. Last forever and more econmical than some fabrics. Still love to use flannel too..more snuggly.

As one of the pirates in the original Pirates of the Carribean said, "They aren't really rules, they are just guidelines." Or something to that effect.

I like to follow a procedure the first time I do something. At least I want to read and possibly see a video of it being done. Then I find a way that works for me. I feel the same about recipes. They are just guidelines.:)

I agree there are no rules, but even this evening I was reading one of my favorite quilting books and discovered I was breaking a few of the "rules" my all time quilting ladies had laid down. I would like to think of them as guidelines, as quilting is an artform and if art always followed the rules just think of all the amazing things the world would have missed out on.

- quilt with poly threads

- use straight grain bindings for everything but curved edged quilts

- STEAM tops with a bazillion pieces. (I don't "iron" though so as not to distort the pieces, but I use best press, a little steam, and then press it flat within an inch of it's life. Makes quilting MUCH easier.)

-use a single fold binding for nearly all of my quilts

- mix high end fabric with low end fabric

- I prewash most of what I sew with but often times unwashed bits get mixed in

All this rule breaking and you know what? Not one person yet has rejected one of my quilts. :)

I used to tell my students they must respect their right not to get into trouble. It confused many of them until I explained that they must respect themselves as they must respect others. It worked well once they understood. The rest were not rules - just guidelines on how to follow my One Rule. :)
