I have two quilts and two blankets or coverlets that my grandmother made in the late 1800's. the quilts were what she called "crazy quilts" they are 8" blocks made from scraps of fabric, the sashings are from flour sacks as are the backings. I think the battings are worn out quilts. The blankets or coverlets were made from raw fleece, washed, carded, spun, dyed and woven by her. They were put on top of the bed for show, the quilts were underneath for warmth. If there is any snobbery about this, then I think she had more pride in the very beautiful wool coverlets. The quilts were definitely very everyday utility things just like everyone else had. Not everyone had the knowledge to make the blankets/coverlets. But I never heard her refer to either with pride, just a matter of fact - "we had to make them, you couldn't buy them in the stores then." We could learn humility from our grandmothers.

An afghan can be knitted or crocheted ... all wonderful and cuddley and comforting for the little ones we do them for!
at the end of the day they all serve the function of blanketing a person. You can always get knit-picky (heehee), but why? we stack them up on the bed like blankets, I throw them over my feet when they are cold like a blanket. So, I'm not going to get offended when someone calls it a blanket. All quilts are blankets (unless they aren't)- but only special blankets get to be quilts :)

Nope, doesn't bother me a bit. I just correct them (and usually get that deer-in-the-headlights look in response) and move on. They can call them anything they want - it doesn't change the fact that they are QUILTS, not blankets, although in the cartoon Linus always had his "blanket". Maybe that's why they call them blankets. This is not a problem worth fretting about. :)

It does not bother me at all. I made quilts for my grandkids and they all callled them blankets and used them to death.
