I like #1. The star pops! There's nothing wrong with #2 , but it is lacking in contrast.

Boy this is a hard one. I like red white and black and think the contrast is greater on that one. BUT
I like the fall colors on the 2nd one too. If you are going for contrast take the first one.

#1 is my choice - the star really stands out in the block - very nice.

I like the colours in the first one better, but in the second one, I like the fact that the outer border matches the tone of the central star, which makes the eye move. Did you deliberately make the background so similar to the star background in the first one? I am not sure what effect you are going for when you say you want it to float?
