Do you use a leader when you piece?

So, I'm trying to understand what a leader is for. Is it just to keep the thread from bunching as you start sewing? Doesn't just holding the thread as you start sewing accomplish that? Or is it for something else...

you know,Mom taught me [56] years ago to use a mouse[scrap piece of fabric, small enough to contain about six stitches].I used this method for years. A really great idea. It saved thread, wasn't messy; no threads left on the floor or project; my machine never jammed up. ect....
Along comes Bonnie Hunter; with 'Leaders And Enders'. Another really great idea and method. It also takes some pre- planning and organizing. I really love her ideas, patterns, skills, teaching methods. When I grow up, I want to be just like her.
To get to the reason I'm writeing, just pick up your next two pieces of fabric, sew them , chain stitching. Even if it is just two pieces. Do not cut between before adding two more. Just continue this way throughout your block.Your b lock will be neater. You only need to be organized up to the next step. Ha -ha.... Sometimes that's only as far as I get with planning ahead.

I didn't used to until I got here to the Board - hadn't ever even heard of it. Now I wish I had and cannot imagine starting any little piece without a leader! I always and consistently get bunches and nests at the start.
