I've always used a hoop. Just a plain hoop - no base on it. I have used it for years. I think it cost less than 20.00, but that was years ago. I have also quilted with a large wood frame. I like the hoop because it is portable and doesn't take up so much space. I bought a vintage wood frame a year ago, but haven't used it yet.

Personally I have tried frames and hoops and disliked them both. I hand quilt without either and it is so relaxing and I love it that way!
Just make sure you baste or pin it generously and it will come out just as smooth as if you used a hoop or frame....honest! Trust me you will fall in love with hand quilting!

I've only hand quilted small quilts, but I do not use a frame. I tried but could never get the hang of it. I tried a standing frame and lap hoop but it never worked out. I like it without a frame. You should try it first without and if you feel your need more structure get a hoop and try again.

The only quilt I hand stitched was done on a standing frame. At times I found it ackward to quilt with. I bought one of those PVC pipe frames but haven't used it yet. I think I'll try hand quilting again. Thanks for asking.

I've done both, depending on what I'm quilting. Have the rectangular PVC that stands on the floor, and have a hoop with a base ... well, have one without a base as well. The one with the base is rather awkward, to me.

You pretty much have to use a frame or hoop to keep the wrinkles out of your quilt. Trust me, my MIL doesn't use either one and her quilts are a mess. When she's done quilting she gives it to me to fix and sew the binding on. What a nightmare !!!
