Ok I finished it!!! I did some feathering and pretty quilting but I also did some stippling and cute baby things. I think it will be sweet and special but maybe not so special that they'll be afraid to use it! I want her to see the quilt first and then I'll post a few pictures!

i think you need to talk to the customer...ask if she plans on the quilt being (used) laundered- treated like a baby quilt- layed on the floor for baby to lay on...spit up on...
or if she would like it to be one that will probably be put away- maybe taken out once in a while to be shown off...
i've gone (over-board) a bit on a couple quilts in the past and had people who were not necessarily unhappy with it...but not really pleased either---it made the quilt something they did not intend...and then they felt the need to make a new one to (replace) the one that was "over the top" ...before assuming you should get a little input- even if you want to surprise her- although a wonderful (thought) it can backfire. I had one lady say to me....'i don't see why you couldn't just do something nice & simple- it was a nice, simple quilt---it wasn't for a show or something'...she was really unhappy---and i was a little (hurt)...
and i made kid;s quilts for a few family members that i thought the kids would really enjoy...the parents insisted on putting them 'away' to save...for what i don't understand...they show them every now & then...but the kids have never been able to play on them...which is what i made them for.

I would definitiely ask her. If you have done baby quitls in the past for her--that have lighter quitling on them--she may be expecting something similar. I personally do not like much quilting on baby quilts so I would be extremely disappointed if someone did the to a quilt of mine without consulting me first. I say all this with experience--as I also do quilting for customers and even if they say I can do whatever I want, I still try to get a feel for what style they like. I ask them if they want simple quilting or more dense quilting. I ask them if they like feathers or not. I still try to figure out what style they like --even if they say I can do whatever I want on their quilt. Good luck.

I finished the quilt and posted pictures over in the pictures forum. I emailed her some pictures and I'm happy to say she loves it! I think a lot of you were right in that if I really had gone hog wild on it, it might have become something she didn't intend. I did fancy it up a bit but it's still most definitely a baby quilt. Thanks for the advice!
