    I agree with you. Things you might try is to take the metallic threads off the machine and set it in a coffee cut behind the machine and let the thread come off the spool and up over the machine. I've also heard turning the spool upside down also works. I was just told in class this weekend that cone spools, even the small ones should be used sitting up straight (another good use of the the coffee cup) and ones that have flat ends laying down. Now while I've never had a problem with that its another avenue to follow if I need to trouble shoot. My thing is that I've paid thousands for my machine and it should take anything I put on it. I did have to try different things before I got the serger thread to do FSL without breaking but once I figured it out, it was great.
