I am a big fan of machine tacking ( or machine tying) when in a crunch. It takes so much less time... and I am more likely to put in more tacks.

Keep in mind that machine tacking can involve only two or three short stitches, backstitched of course. When done that way, the effect on the back is minimal. In other words, it's looks not very different from a stitch taken by hand.

I tie all my flannel quilts--I grew up with that kind and have always preferred them--so soft and fluffy and warm.

All I ever saw growing up were tied quilts. I like both ways of doing them.
The one I'm working on now will be machine quilted though.

The best memory I have when we use to visit my grandma on my dad's side was sleeping under her big heavy tied quilts. The room would be on the cold side, and she had about 2 of these quilts on the beds, and they were so warm and cozy. I would see all those little ties, and just thought that was how a quilt was done.

I have a really big king size scrappy quilt that I was going to have longarmed, but I think I might just tie it! It would save the high cost of quilting it. Thanks for reminding me how wonderful it is to tie a quilt

I can't stand a quilted quilt at night. I grew up with the old wool batts in between two layers of fabric or sometimes a crazy quilt top. The wool batts were removed once in a while, sent to the woolen mill and re-carded. I have found that if I tie the quilt with wool it won't pull out and it shrinks when you wash it rather than pull out.
