The "flannel" backed tablecloths I've found lately have a thin, polyester type backing that almost appears to "shed". Is this the type of tablecloth you bought? I remember years ago, the vinyl tablecloths had a thick "true" flannel back. Don't see these in the stores anymore.

I agree with ILoveToQuilt. A friend of mine helped me cover two big sheets of foam board with batting and stuck them to the wall with those Velcro wall hangers. It is more sturdy. When I need to "clean" threads off, I use one of those "cotton pickers" that I picked up at a Quilt Show one year. You could also use one of those sticky rollers. Wasn't very expensive to put together.

Why not just tape a flannel sheet to the wall? You can get those really big. SVAL

I bought a nice vinyl flannel backed table cloth on sale from a kitchen catalog. It is thick, almost puffy and works great to hold fabric. It is my retreat design wall it.

I think the tablecloths are lighter weight than the sheets and will hold better to the wall with just tape than sheets would. I actually stapled my tablecloth that I got on clearance from Walmart for 50 cents to the wall of my craft room because I didn't think about using blue tape. A bonus is that the tablecloth was red and white 1 inch checks which show through faintly and can be used as sort of a grid. I use a tape roller to get the threads off the wall. I always have a tape roller around to get the threads off my clothes when I'm through sewing.

I bought tablecloth by the yard at Joann's that has a nice thick backing.

Now that Spring is (I hope) on the way, check at a K-Mart, Walmart, etc. for picnic table cloths. Put 2 or 3 together and tape them together to make the size you need.

If there any Amish or Mennonite Communities near you, check out their stores. They carry stuff that we used to find in ours many years ago. They still use that on a daily basis.

I have a piece of white flannel fabric that I hemmed the bottom and top. I put eyelets in the top edge so it will hang on small nails. It has worked fine for me for years. It is big but when not needed, I just take it down and fold it up and store it. The nails are up next to the ceiling and stay up there. You could make it any size you want. I currently am working on a pinwheel quilt. So right now it is holding four rows of pinwheel and it is staying up there nicely.
