I have a very similar machine that belonged to my 1st mother-in-law, but as best I can remember it has an external motor. I guess I'll have to dig her out and take a closer look. I haven't opened her up in years, motor blown by someone who borrowed her (without permission) many years ago.

For accessories - if you buy one with the box that came with the 401's, it can be spendy. If you find a set without the box you can save about 75% of the cost. It takes the same accessories as the 403 and the 500, and often you'll find a full set for the 403 way, way cheaper than one listed for a 401. Only real difference is the 401 has a built in cam stack so you don't need cams for some of the stitches.

I'll look when I get home, someone just gave me a bunch of Singer stuff and I know I have an almost full set of cams and maybe the feet too. If so, you can have it for postage as I already have full sets for two 401A's, a 401G, a 403 and the 500 (and they all take the same- so I really don't need any extras of them!)

Gee, Cathy, you are an enabler from the word go. I love your sweet sharing attitude. I was just sitting here thinking, "I bet I have some stuff she can use, I'll go check after awhile and PM her"; then the next post was your offer. I am such a procrastinator that I would probably be in the middle of next week getting around to going and looking, and now these days, the idea loses itself in my daily efforts in just a couple of days. UGHHHHH, I am getting old.....

Another reason to be very careful allowing any one to use it. If it's not theirs they don't care. Worse when someone uses it without permission.

I've got the standard set listed in the manual (including the manual LOL!!) except the long shank hemmer foot and the ruffler. There is also the gather foot, edge stitcher and tucker that were optional with this machine. There is also the darning foot, but a modern hopping foot from Sew Classic works so much better for that and FMQ.

I gave away all my long shank feet - and then ended up with more without trying. My husband fixed up a 99 for a lady, and she gave us all the extra stuff she had that didn't fit it - so I ended up with a few more long shank singer feet LOL!!

I've sent a PM - and if someone else can come up with the missing items, we'll have a full set for the budding seamstress!

I love contribution to sewing addiction in the young!
