That's too bad about the broken bed. Everything else could be dealt with. What a shame. You may be able to recupe your losses as a parts machine.

I would like to see that. It would certainly be a labor of love. You would never see your investment pay off monetarily but then it's not all about money either. All the methods I can think of involve heat and would destroy the finish. That's the hardest part for me to get right. I know I'm not capable of restoring or reproducing the decals but I know there's people out there who can.

THAT would be an easy clean and a quick doubling of my money... (not this time thanks) I JUST sold one to my apprentice for $200 that I restored. (I could have sold it most anywhere else for more like 400+)

I did. I specialize in Gauntlets, but I have a track record of making nice helmets (although I strongly dislike making them)

That particular helmet was made because the buyer had just become "Prince" in our local SCA group and one of his first "commands" was "now that I am Prince of the Mists, I would very much like for you to construct me a helm..." Ahh well. The faces are interchangeable, and the "grill" version is made out of 1/4" bar stock cut/filed and welded. The "coronet of 16ga brass was etched using radio shack PCB etching compound and Sharpy as a resist...

updates on the busted butt machine...

The take up lever was not damaged, but the hoop of metal it works within was almost free spinning.

    This thing was gross underneath...

so here it the break from underneath...

here I have "mocked up" the plan. I intend to remove the upper portion (once the screws are unstuck) and take the bed to work. I will clamp the bed into place, drill four holes in a hard steel plate (on each side) and then place that piece on the machine as shown here. Then i will mark and drill those holes, then tap them with threads. Then screw the two plates to the bed and begin the top surface restore. A little QB magic and it just might work...

    Such a sad sight.....

but she is pretty with even a little cleaning. I imagine that with a little french polishing action she will be a stunner.
