2.5 is my magic number. If I can't get at 2.5 square or strip, it's trash.

This is me as well. I only buy for projects - no 'stash' buying. I have lots of scraps that could be odd pieces up to a couple of yards. I use the odd bits to make test blocks; home dec projects; gifts; etc. I'm not a 'scrappy' quilter. If I hear of someone who needs something I may have in my 'scraps' they are certainly free to a good home.

Scraps are less than FQ to my thinking. As for what I keep-- 2" is the smallest square I'll keep, and a 1.5"x6 is the smallest strip I'll keep for a string quilt.

Anything leftover from a quilt is scrap since I buy for the projects and don't have a stash.

1/8 yard or fat eighth and smaller is a scrap to me .... and it has to be at least 2" otherwise I toss.

I don't have a hard and fast rule, but if I can't wrap it around my comic boards, then it goes into the bin with usable scraps. It probably has to be 2 1/2" - 3" for me to keep as a "usable scrap", but if it's a long 2" scrap, I would keep that, too, since that makes it more likely I would use it for something.

Anything smaller I put into a separate pail which theoretically I can use for stuffing - I just starting doing that maybe six months ago and haven't made anything needing stuffing since then, but I have occasionally pulled something out of the pail when I want a really small piece for something.

I'm still trying to achieve a balance. I don't like to feel like I'm wasting things, but if I save too much, the organization becomes overwhelming.

From time to time I go thru a color in my stash, I toss pieces that are less than 1/4 yd., into my scrap totes.

a scrap is a piece of fabric I can't use for a current project! ANY scrap never is wasted--it either goes in a "stuffing" pile or a pile with selvedges or a "crumb box" and gets RECYCLED to someone who CAN use it!
