    I was having that problem last week and came across this same suggestion and I used a tall mason jar.
    Worked like a charm!

    An empty Aurifil spool will often serve as a holder for the larger spools with big holes, so you can put it on your machine in the usual position.

    I use a quart jar to put the cone in, run the thread straight up through the thread antenna and thread as usual.

    I put the spool in a tea pot, run the thread through the spout and set it behind my machine. It works great for me.

    I tape an extra large safety pin to the back of my sewing machine, and thread it through the eye. It keeps it from getting drag. I just set the cone behind my machine, don't even put it in a mug. I find this works best for me.
