I purchased small wooden craft spools at Hobby Lobby that fit inside the larger spool and fit over the spool pin. I also have found wooden spool inserts (are about 2" long) that fit inside the larger spools and over the spool pin at a couple of quilt shops.

Use a vertical paper towel holder. Works great when I don't want to haul all my sewing stuff to the cabin. Just set it behind the machine and thread as usual.

I just use a pint canning jar and never have had any problems, but I do have a question. The spool that you're showing looks like machine embroidery thread, is it? If so, I've never managed to figure out how to adjust the tension/s for using it on an older machine, none of my older machines seem to like it. Maybe you can give me some hints.

If you're referring to the pictures of the spool insert, I don't think it was embroidery thread. I think it was Bottom Line or something similar. I haven't used it on my embroidery machine.

"I put an eye screw in an empty spool of thread and put it on the pin."

BelfryBat, I love this idea. I have a spool pin doily (instead of the red felt circle) which my sister crocheted for me on my spool pin, so I usually just run the thread under the doily. Then I have taped two safety pins upside down on the back of my machine and run the thread through the circle in the end of the pins before threading as usual. I bought a couple wooden tubes to put inside my cones, but they are made to put inside the oversized spools. I may try using one of those to put the eye screw in.

That's what I do. The trick is to have a mug that is wide enough to allow the thread to unravel freely around the edges. The weight of the cone holds it in place. I run it through a taped on 1" piece of plastic straw on top of my machine. Don't ask me why I don't use a regular safety pin instead.

I have used a heavy mug and a safety pin taped to machine for thread guide.

I like Belfrybat's suggestion. I purchased a spool holder, which could accommodate larger spools of thread, which I could then thread through my machine. The problem I have encountered however, is that the metal bar that the thread runs through is always coming unscrewed (somewhat like me at times), but I might try Belfrybat's suggestion in the future.
