great quilts! and both will lots of "negative space" to allow either magnificent feathers or lots of "modern" quilting. check out Angela Walters Shapes book--nice, reference type with ideas for different shapes.

Beautiful quilt...for some reason using silver metallic thread in the dark blue sections...you could do them in any motif, maybe even centered with dark blue thread used around them. Love both the quilts and can't wait to see what you do with them!

The negative space is very interesting here. I have been paging through 2 Angela Walters books and Judi Madsen's book and making notes. Later this week when I have some time in front of the quilt, I'll start doodling.

I like the idea of the silver and blue threads for sure.

Thank you for showing your quilts!! I have been collecting these patterns and have fabric set aside. I don't need/want a huge quilt and after seeing yours I just might begin this and make a smaller version. Yours are just lovely!

Oh! yes--silver thread would be awesome! If you don't want to mess with metallic, check out a silver gray poly. I've used that before and really liked the extra shine and silver look without messing with metallic thread.

Is metallic thread a pain to quilt with? I have never had a problem with it on my Innova...I use Superior Threads metallics exclusively and I get great tension with no breakage.

I don't mind metallics but I wonder what happens with them long term on a quilt that will be washed a fair bit. I haven't been quilting long enough to have seen my own "old" quilting. I saw a thread here not long ago about the metallic print fabric turning green, would the threads do this?

Both of these quilts will become camping quilts (trailer camping) and will likely get dragged in dirt and washed when we get home, etc.

Farm Quilter - Metallic threads can be challenging because they break easily and don't like extra twist. That said, if your tension is right - i.e looser than with say a poly or a cotton and balanced so the bobbin thread isn't tormenting it - it's just fine. I haven't run into a thread yet that I can't use on my machine with appropriate tension adjustment - there are ones I -won't- use again because I disliked them so much (like the Gutermann poly I was just trying to use up for practice that sliced some of my guides even with the tension so loose that the tensioner nut was almost falling off! And the lint! Worse than any cotton I've ever used.), but nothing that I can't. If I recall, the Superior Metallic is a poly core wrapped with metallic. That would do something similar to running a mono-poly with your metallic - and be friendlier still to use. Not to mention half the thread consumption of running a metallic with a mono-poly.

I agree that metallic works fine with correct tension, but I'm a "lazy" quilter and always go with the threads that are easiest. A trilobal in silver or gold really has a nice shine. I'm also a little wary of metallic threads over the long haul--does anyone know how they hold up to washing and age?

Did you ever post a photo of these quilted? Would like to see what you did with it. I'm working on one now and planning to use this idea of splitting into two quilts.
