A long time ago, ladies did with what they had. I have pieced border before and they came out just fine. No one should have to buy a large amount of fabric to just get some strips.

I do not piece my borders. Also I sew the outside large borders strips together end to end and not on the diagonal. That wastes a lot of fabric and you can not tells how the borders are sewn after the quilt is quilted. I do however sew my inner smaller inner borders diagonally.! have tried sewing the outer borders on the LOF and actually saw no difference. By sewing them that way the outer border is not supposed to be wavy.

remember- there are no quilt police!!!!!!!

I piece the narrow borders often. Using bias seams in your joins gives a nice finished look.

Borders are almost pieced in quilts larger than 40 inches. Most patterns call for borders cut on the crosswise grain which means they have to be pieces. I personally like to cut lengthwise borders on the lengthwise grain and crosswise borders on the crosswise grain. This means that I cut the borders first-of course, they are a bit longer than estimated-just to be sure. I use a diagonal seam and match the pattern whenever possible because I like it to not be obvious. By the time I quilt it, the seam is absolutely gone and I haven't spent a fortune for unneeded yardage.

I always piece my borders! I love how my quilts look though I am not someone that competes.
