Have you done free motion on your brother vs6000i ? I do the quilt as you go because it's easier than doing a whole quilt. Thank you so much for all the suggestions!!

My Bernina 350 has push button sewing & a knee lift for the presser foot. I have intermittent nerve problems with my right leg, so I wanted this machine with the start/stop button. It takes a little getting used to, but it's allowed me to keep sewing even when I can't feel my leg.

My Singer 404 is in a cabinet and has the foot pedal attached to the inside of the cabinet so that I can use it with my knee. It is a simple straight stitcher that makes a gorgeous stitch.

I have done straight stitching on baby quilts and lots of hot pads, table toppers and small items. It does not have a big enough harp area for anything large. For the price I have not been disappointed. Two of the ladies who come to our annual quilt retreat have purchased the CS6000i to bring to the retreat. Will find out next week if they are as satisfied as I am.

My Pfaff has both a knee pedal and a start/stop button, but it's a bit pricey. You might try Craig's list to see if anyone is selling a used machine.

Has she tried using the pedal under her arm (armpit)? It would keep hands free to guide fabric though this might take some practice.

Good luck to you both! I know several brands of machines have a knee pedal, but you may have to get creative, and a good dealer may be able to help.

I also have an inexpensive Brother that has a button and doesn't need a foot pedal. It also has speeds so I can slow down if I need to

My Janome Magnolia 7330 has a start/stop button. When you want to use it all you have to do is unplug the foot pedal from the machine & then use the start/stop button instead. My machine cost me $329 in 2009 & I bought it at a quilt shop. I think they are more expensive now but maybe you could find a display model with a discount. It also has a control speed slide so you can slow down the speed of the machine if you want. I think that would be very useful, especially while you were getting use to using the start/stop button.
