Its a horseshoe nail for nailing steel shoes to a horse's hoof. I've used a million of them

The horseshoe nail wins.... does look like it. Horseshoe nail-shuttle remover, everything should have at least two uses.

It does look like someone altered it to fit a different machine than the one it was made for.

When using the term in relationship to sewing it is a tool to either perforate holes for eyelets or sometimes to hold fabric together while sewing. The one that came with early Singer sewing machines can be seen at http://www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/simanco/25539/ Another site I found that shows various modern day tools and stilettos is at http://www.jankrentz.com/displaypage.php?ID=42

I've seen a few crochet hooks that have been filed to be used as a stiletto/awl with some of the machines I've gotten.

I have some kind of vintage architectural drawing tool that I use as a stiletto. I found it in an old sewing machine. I had no clue what it was, so I assumed it was a stiletto. Someone asked me and I said it was a stiletto. They explained it's original purpose, which is some kind of drawing tool. It works well as a stiletto, though, and I'm happy.

Thanks Janey, looked at original singer tools, got One! Thought it was a small screwdriver with the tip messed up. Theresa

jumping away from sewing machines; a stiletto is a very thin and sharp blade weapon. Also a very thin and sleek USAF aircraft (early 60s maybe.)
