I take larger rag quilts to the laundromat. But smaller rag quilts or rag quilts made with non-flannel fabrics (except for middle layer) I put in the dryer first with dryer balls or tennis balls. Then I'll go outdoors and shake it out. Then I'll wash it and then dry again. Make sure to clean the lint filter every 10 minutes.

I’ve never taken a rag quilt to the laundromat. The biggest I’ve made is a twin size. I would however, shake it well outside then run through the dryer on cool for about an hour. That’ll trap a lot of the lint before washing. The. Wash and dry as usual. Worked for me.

I take mine to the laundry mat. Easier on my dryer.

It looks as if each person has their own way of dealing with rag quilts. I do wash mine - usually lap size - in my top loading washer, then take it outside and shake it well before putting it in my dryer. I do less rag cutting, every 3/4 to 1 inch, rather than cutting every 3/8" or 1/2". After several washings I can't tell the difference. The ones I make for dogs have even less cutting.

You could put the quilt inside a large lingerie bag when you wash it and line dry it.
