Fork pins can be a great help when matching up seams. Pricey but well worth it to me to get seams that match.

The fork pins made me remember another good tip. I double pin where the seams join. I line up the two seams and "lock" them in place, the put one pin on each side of the joining seams. I think it's the same idea with using the fork pins, but I just use regular, flower pins. The two pins really help hold things in place.

With some seams, I pin both sides of seam with small thin pins, like embroidery pins. The bigger pins, at least for me, create too big of hump sometimes. I've done what feline suggests and start at seam, sew one way, check seams, and flip and sew the other way. I do it this way exclusively with mini quilts.

Early on in quilting life, I realized that I would swing to the left at the end of sewing a seam...making it less than 1/4" inch. This makes joining inaccurate. I recently started doing this habit again....so I use a stiletto sometimes to make sure I stay straight. Another QB member recently reminded me of this when I was struggling with a pattern.

I use glue sticks...can't say enough good things about them. Run a strip of glue..put the 2 pieces together, flip one back to approx. 1/4"(just about where you think you'll sew)..see if they line up perfectly..if they do, pinch the joint and you're good. If not, slide the top piece till it's where you want it..glue stays moist so blocks slide right to where you want them!
