Do you think the 1/4 in foot is made that way so we will be sewing a scant 1/4 in? That would compensate for when we press the seam to one side and get a little lump where the seam is.

it took me a year to figure out that one of my machine's 1/4" foot gives a scant 1/4" with the needle in the default position.

i never bothered to measure. :lol:

I just bought a baby lock 1/4 with guide, first thing I did was check the 1/4, perfect.
I have another one that is off, and the elna is so so. I know when I make log cabin blocks I have to stay with the same machine. Ask me how I know:)

Mine doesn't have a hole, and I have to move my needle over 2 positions to the rt.

Even if your machine is off a bit, so long as you use the same machine, with the same measurements, your quilt will not be "off".

I have to check out my foot to see if I can get the 1/8 inch, what a thought (it'll be nice for my DJ)...I learn something new on this board every day!

I learned this is not true if you are using a lot of triangles, diamonds, or other intricate piecing sizes. It works great for simple things, but I found out it is better to just make sure your 1/4" is accurate. Or maybe I'm a goob and it's just me. Wouldn't be the first time! :lol:

A lot of new quilters don't realize that different threads can give you a different measurement. The thicker the thread, the more a quilter needs to compensate, sewing a scant quarter inch to achieve the proper measurement. It's one reason I love Aurofil so much. The thread is strong but thin and doesn't require any fussing for the 1/4" seam.
