I've never been able to use a chalk pencil. They just don't write. I really love my General's Charcoal White pencil! It's my favorite marking tool. It sharpens to a nice point, it draws nice, crisp lines, it stays on as long as I need it to, but is usually gone if I quilt right on top of it. Or I can erase it with a good eraser.
