Since I hate Yo-yo's I would suggest Hexagons or English Paper Piecing. I am still making an I Spy quilt with hex's. Great take along project.

Do you embroider? I have a number of the 1930's quilt/embroidery pattern sets. They are great for working on while traveling or waiting in Dr's. office.

ON a trip is the only time I seem able to sit and do cross stitch.........I keep a tote bag ready to go, just grab and go (has everything in it..needles, scissors, etc)

If you have scraps to get rid of you could join the 9 patch block. You could cut up a bunch of squares prior to leaving and then work on them for your trip.

Embroidery of some kind would be a good thing too. I am currently doing hand embroidery on crazy quilt blocks...they are 17" square and very portable. Now you have to make a decision.

That's what I'd do. Or Yo Yos, though I've never made any! (Maybe I should try them....)
