Here is the email reply I received this afternoon. I wonder who Thomas is? Obviously this is a canned message and they forgot to change the name. Too bad they can't track the other purchases we make that are generated by our stop at WalMart's to buy fabric. So, here's their reply:

Dear Thomas,

Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding the fabric department in your local store. As with any merchandise decision that we make, we have based our decision to reduce the stitching and fabric departments on customer demand, which does not appear to be as high today for a full stitching and fabric offering in some markets as it may have been at Walmart in the past.

In keeping with our emphasis on being a store of the community, Walmart is converting the fabrics and crafts department in some stores to a newly expanded assortment of merchandise that focuses on life's celebrations. We are thrilled to offer our customers this exciting new crafts and celebrations center that makes available craft and party planning needs along with information on current trends and new ideas in the area of life's celebrations, such as holidays, weddings and birthdays.

In those stores where the new crafts and celebrations center is placed, merchandise commonly referred to as 'notions' will be included in the product offerings - such as sewing machines, yarn, needles, thread, etc. As a part of this conversion, most of our new and remodeled stores that opened earlier this year, as well as a small number of existing stores, will feature the new crafts and celebrations center in place of bolt fabrics. Walmart will continue to carry cut fabric in most of our stores. Due to the continued evaluation of our stores, we are unable to share a list of existing stores scheduled to receive the new crafts and celebrations center at this time.

Sincerely,
Walmart Customer Care

In Mustang Okla. before they removed the fabric, it was made known that they were going to take it out. There was a 3-ring Binder on the fabric counter that people signed and left notes for Corp. Offc. regarding their wish that they would rethink this grand plan and let the fabric dept. remain. This notebook was actually hand delivered to Corp. in Arkansas. The fabric dept went away as they planned. Many many phone calls had been made as well asking them to please not remove fabrics. Fell upon deaf ears. Sooo many ladies & gents phoned & wrote that they understood WalMarts decision but they would stop purchasing from there totally and that their Life Celebration selection was rather pathetic since we have such huge Party Stores such as Party Galaxy in our area. And we would get the word out for folks to spend their hard earned money in the bigger Stores that specialize in Party & Celebration Supplies. It is sad that so many many people depended on their fabric dept and now have to drive into Okla. City to get fabric. And for some, that is just not possible. Some of our rural surrounding towns have really been hurt. IMHO they have tried to turn WalMart into a Target Store.

This is so pathetic...they are removing the fabric depts because they do not want to have to have an employee in the dept to cut fabric. Anything else in the store can be just picked up and bought. I use to go to WalMart a lot to look over the fabric (some a poor selection) if I had to have something and I did use it a lot however once closed I do not go in often and as of now I will not go there unless i just have to.

I received the same canned message. I am over it. I will pay more and go to Publix, Kroger or the Pig. I hope enough of us will do the same. It is obvious they do not care but lets prove them wrong....shop elsewhere.....I am

I just sent an email with the closure, when the fabric department is removed from my local store, I will remove myself also.
And I will.

MJ

I figured last month (including prescriptions, groc, car maintenance) I spent over $1,000 there. That will be a pretty big loss over time.

Bangor, ME

This a a brand new Super Walmart that is less than a year old. As of this date, they have no plans to close the fabric department. I do find it a little strange that they have jelly rolls and fat quarters in the 'crafts department' which is on the other side of the store.

The Walmart that was in Brewer, ME lost their fabric department this spring when they remodled.

Did yours say, "Dear Thomas", also?

They just built a new "super store" last year in a neighboring town. No fabric but FQ's and FQ bundles. It was so empty of customers the one time I went there to check it out you could throw a bowling ball down the aisles and not hit anyone.

Actuallly, the Nebraska stores do not all have fabric. Lincoln has two stores, and only one has fabric. The Nebraska City store never had fabric, due to an agreement with a lqs. I think you need to check with the individual stores.
