I had that happen when I use to hand quilt, trying to sew through seam allowances, using the tiny needles. To hand sew on bindings I now use a short thicker needle, they never break.

It couldn't be in the quilt. I had the whole thing on the table and just the corner I was working on was hanging down. The dogs have been shedding like crazy and I think it got swept up with dog fur.

At least that is what I'm counitng on.

Superstition: Good luck for the recipient receiving the quilt is what I've heard when your needle breaks or snaps like that.

I heard Jinny Beyer say in a video on The Quilt Show just recently that she always uses 11 between. Otherwise the pressure she exerts on the needle held in the particular manner she recommends would break most others. She likes John James Glide is I'm not mistaken...both for hand piecing and quilting.

They just don't make things like they used to...even needles it seems.

I had several break while hand-quilting, but they were all from the same package. I think I just got a bad lot.

I just had one snap last week and was REALLY surprised. Like you, I've never had one snap before and I was quite surprised. Sorry it happened to you, but I'm glad it wasn't just me. :-)

If you know the brand, it would be nice to let us know so that we may be cautious when purchasing needles. I really hate when I can't find a needle that I have been using. Good luck finding the point. You can bet someone else WILL find it. It always happens that way.

I have had size 10 needles break while handquilting -- I bend size 9 -- so next I will try a little bigger one but I like the thinness of the smaller needles -- but yes, I have had needles break -- one of my most used tools is a magnet -- I spend a bit of time searching for dropped needles
