I don't buy kits. I think part of the fun of quilting is finding a pattern, altering it, (I never do a quilt strickly off the pattern) then searching for the perfect fabric for the quilt. I really enjoy the planning process.

Some places charge a premium for kits, others don't, it really depends on the store.

The nice thing about kits is that you can get those that have a lot of matched fabrics in them, from the same fabric line, using the same dye-lots, so you don't have to chase all over finding and color-matching fabrics.

I love kits. I DON'T like all the fabric choosing the rest of you are raving about! For every 5 quilts I make maybe 2 of them are from kits. I also like to buy fabric bundles - either 3 or 5 yards of coordinating fabric bundled together. I have patterns for both sizes. Love kits.

I have bought a few kits. In fact, I am about to order another one! I buy kits when I love the fabrics and don't want to chase around collecting them. Also, I am beginning to get into more Primitive-type quilts and none of my LQSs stock this style so a kit works nicely for me.

That being said the majority of the quilts that I have made have not been from kits.

I've bought and finished a few, but now that I have more confidence had rather design my own and choose the fabrics.

I have purchased a few. They're great for gifts, or if I love the pattern and don't want to coordinate fabrics. I don't buy them often since I typically prefer to make my own quilts, my way, without someone dictating the colors etc.

i have on occassion spent money on a kit- but turns out 9 out of 10 times i will replace the fabric anyway- because i don't like what is in the kit- and i seldom actually follow someone else's pattern anyway---of i want the exact same quilt as someone else has i'll go to penneys and buy one
so for me they are a waste of money- but for someone who wants ... that quilt....in those fabrics i can see the appeal- seems like a really expensive way to go though- to not have anything left over for other projects- guess i'm just not a kit type of quilter

I bought one for a table runner last year and I liked it! It was on sale and I couldn't have gotten a better price for the fabrics individually. I haven't seen a quilt yet in just the colors I'd want, but I'd consider a kit again if the colors and price were right!
