Marking a quilt top

Welcome to the board
I am marking my first ever big quilt. I put the top on a flat surface (table etc) and I use theCrayola washable markers except the yellow one as I read here that it was very difficult if not impossible to wash it away
with the "search" function at the top you will find other suggestions also

Suggestion - don't go fancy, just quilt around the blocks or across the blocks. Do give it plenty of quilting as the quilt will be loved and dragged around and washed plenty of time. Just have fun with it.

Hello Jean. Welcome to the board. I hand quilt and use the blue pens to mark my quilts or if I am just quilt qrid I use one 1" masking tape. The blue pens I can get at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, or and local fabric store. I really like the pens due to just need to spray water on the blue marking to erase off quilt. Just be sure all the blue is gone before you iron or dry your quilt. If you have any questions on hand quilting or applique just pm me and I will try to help. Donna

Welcome. I use a very fine, cheap mechanical pencil with a white eraser that takes off the lines very well. Or a verithin in yellow, white or silver or soap slivers (dial) or chalk. It depends on what color or prints the fabric is.

For a first quilt I'd suggest outlining the pieces, "in the ditch", or quilting a grid. I like ceramic pencils for any marking. Stencils can be used for fancier designs. If marks on the quilt will bother you, then pretest pencils/pens/chalk on leftover fabric before marking the entire top.
