I love my Janome 6600 and would buy a spare one if I could afford.
But like Kas said...test drive whichever machine you plan to buy.

My Viking Sapphire 830 cost me $1100 new a few years ago. It has been a great machine and has features that I love but did not know I would when I bought it.
It measures 10 in from needle to the back. The feature I like the most is the needle down with the automatic foot lift when you stop sewing. This is great for applique since it lifts the foot just enough to turn you work.
I like the drop in bobbin also since you can see how much thread is left.
It is not an embroidery machine.
It is also easy to thread and fill bobbins.
