One of my favorite pieced backs is a brick pattern. I cut my blocks 12x18 and arranged them in a running brick pattern. Starting every other row with a 9x12 inch row to creating the staggered look. It created a truly reversible quilt... The front is english paper pieced stars.

Pieced backings are great because they can be anything you want! As simple as putting leftovers together to the size needed or doing blocks or stripes.....What does the fabric lend itself to? Is there one piece that has a pattern or something you would like to feature? if so, then build around it. I agree with trying to do as few seams as you can because it just makes it easier for quilting. Just have fun!

I love piecing my backs. There are tons of ideas on Pinterest. I also use parts from some of the modern quilts I see on my backs. My longarmer always suggests trying to make a pattern that isn't centered because that way if it isn't centered perfectly it is ok. Also it is a good way to use up your stash so you can buy more fabric:-)

I usually do some piecing on all of the backs of my quilts. I like the way it looks, almost making it reversible. And, I read somewhere that including some pieces of various fabrics from the front on the back will also give fabric for future repairs of the front if needed. this will not help much for the quilt you are doing now but I find that pieced backing works wonderfully with QAYG projects...I usually make large blocks then put them together with QAYG sashing...this makes it ideal to use the left over fabric ...I stagger the fabrics and use a sashing on the back that blends with all of them...I usually have about 6 large blocks on the back of the fabric..this is for either a twin or lap size quilt..

I most often piece the backs of my quilts just because I like the secondary design. I use fabrics that I have used on the front in the design of the back. Sometimes I use extra blocks or just strips and squares. I like to choose simple designs and always press the seams open to ensure smoothness as I quilt. It is just a fun thing to do.

Pieced Backing Help
This is the only pieced back I've done. It was a graduation quilt, so the fabric I chose were activities or interests that my niece was into as she was growing up. Dance, band instruments, archery, and dogs/cats as she wants to be a vet. One piece was part of her band uniform. I think she really appreciated it. The front is her college colors. She posts pictures of if on FB throughout the year.
