I like the light background. I like the pattern of your layout.

What a beautiful remembrance of him. I prefer the white. Love the quilt!

This all looks so familiar as I have made several quilts and wall hangings from my husband's shirts that resemble yours. I love the design you have chosen. The background/sashing I have used in the projects I've done is between the 2 that you are proposing and I like it. I find white to be stark but the "tan" you show is a bit "too". I'm currently using one that is ecru with just a bit of a darker shade in it--almost like a tie-dye tea-dye?? It is a good blender. I'm suggesting something more like the color that I see to the right of the picture with the white sashing only a bit lighter!

I was going to go back to my previous Reply but that isn't available for editing so here's another comment. Apparently you like the yellow and I tend to agree with you more than the white. When I see the white option, white is what I see. With the yellow, I see the shirt fabric. What do you see? And what do you want to see?

The yellow is a beautiful color, but the white is what needed on your quilt.

    Hi, lady Illinois:

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I agree with most of people here that white sashing brings consistent and unity to the quilt. I also agree with what you've said, orange/yellow brings out each blocks more.

I am not an experienced quilter. I rely on my instinct. Since I am a scientist, I also rely on logical, reasoning. That's why I want to listen to all the opinions here. I want to know how other quilters choose their colors and fabrics.

For me, this is a learning process. Learn and understand myself.

I guess it comes down to what the function of sashing is about. White sashing makes sashing part of whole (connect each block together). light orange makes each blocks stands out and "pop"?

In either case, I've learned a lot from all of you. Thank you!

I still prefer the white. So, if I were making it, I'd choose white and add red, navy and maybe some grays in some way. I love those colors. I seldom use yellow or orange unless it's in an I spy quilt. I'm not into browns, rusts, etc. Those are just my personal preferences.

However, I'm not making this quilt. I won't be living with it and looking at it every day. Do what pleases you. Take a photo so you can "step back" from it. If you still like the yellow, just do it.

This is for you, not us.

A thoughtful tribute to your dad. Like most I agree that white is the best sashing color.
