I never washed my fabric until I made a red and white table runner using red batik and the white turned a pretty shade of pink the first time I washed it (using cold water no less). Now I wash and then test to see if all the dye is out -- I had to pitch a lovely piece of red since after 4 washes (2 in hot water) it still bled. I find that the easiest test for bleeding is ironing a piece wet on a piece of muslin, though putting a wet piece of the cloth under a glass jar that has some rice in it works too.
