I'm making personalized (ME) aprons, oven mitts, and sending cookbooks, cookie cutter sets and children's cooking accessories for all my grandchildren and families. Something for them to do as a family. Ages range from newborn (July 12th) to 16.
I just figure we need keep the focus on families interacting. Opppps, almost fell off my soapbox (sorry :))

I agree as some of the best times with my boys have been cooking in the kitchen!
and it never hurts for them to learn to cook!
so many adults can do nothing but take out and push the button on the microwave!

If you want a simple potholder, try this. Take an 8" piece of insulbrite, lay face down. Take an 8" piece of fabric and lay face up. Take 4 more 8" pieces of fabric, fold diagonal and lay on top. Sew down and then turn right side out from the center where it is open. I hope this makes sense. If you have questions, just write me. I'll attach pictures of some I have done.

About the mattress caddy- there are instructions/patterns for a mattress caddy in the "One Yard Wonders" book that is really great. Lots of pockets and it uses a strip of the non stick shelving mat material to hold it in place so if you put books or remotes in it the weight won't pull it out of place.

I made these last year for Christmas gifts and everyone LOVED them! I got a simple pillowcase pattern free off the Internet (just google it) and delved into my stash of Christmas fabrics. They were so quick and simple to make. Each present was 2 in the same fabric, which if I am remembering correctly was only a total of 1.5 yards.

Nice to start thinking now about Christmas presents and give yourself plenty of time to make them.

Aprons,placemats,cosmetic bags (3 sizes) and finish Liam's polar fleece vest.(pattern was too big for him last year.) Possibly some boxer shorts from themed fabric. Grandson's love to get the pillowcases, esp. since their interests are always changing.

For my quilting friends, I am making them tea pot pin cushions. For family members, I usually buy their gifts, they are not big quilt fans, although my mother sews and quilts so I usually get her gift certs to local quilt shops.
