I baste my quilts using the Sharon Schambers method. No getting on the floor. It's easy and gives me the time to really analyze my quilt and decide how best to quilt it. It's worth a look at her instructional video:

I bought one of those tagger guns and used it once. I didn't like the holes it left in the fabric. I figured over time and washings that they would just get bigger and bigger.

I have used a tagging gun and I've used fusing spray. I like the spray best. The only thing that's a problem with it is, you have to quilt right away. If you leave it laying around for a few weeks, it dries and everything falls apart. I usually add a few pins just for safety.

yu must do something to keep the layers together. I suaually don't pin if it is small (16" or 18" but anything larger must be firmy secured so layers don't shift.
I use 1" safety pins - sometimes the long straight pins and sometime basting. Just depends on what works best for achive good results.

Spray baste then pin too. only because I am not quite sure the spray is going to hold until I get to the top.I have good intentions of getting to it in a day or so but life doesn't always work out that way. I just remove the pins as I go. If I am going to do FMQ I baste with thread. There has to be an easier way. LOL

Spray basting here...but will use pinmoors around the outer edges of the quilt.
