When buying at Walmart (I do a lot) just be sure to check the fabric content. All cotton really works best and much of their fabric is blended cotton/polyester.
I generally get 2 yards unless it is super bargain and then I'll get 5 or 6.

Hello and welcome from Michigan!! I buy 4-5 yards of a fabric that I absolutely love and can't live without, I buy 3-4 yards of a fabric that I love, and 2-3 yards of fabric I like and know will be a great blender and 1-2 yards of a fabric that I like. Sorry not much help I know

Hi and welcome from WV. If it is a fabric I think I could use for the backing, such white on white, I would buy at least 4 yards. Otherwise, depends upon how much I like it and if I can immediatey think of some pattern I would like to make. Then I would probably buy 3 yards. I have several pieces that I really liked at one time, now they are not my first choice. Happy quilting :D
