LOL I have a spool of thread from my Mom's old sewing box. She passed in 1986 and I have no idea how long she had it but the Price says 25 cents for 500 yards. By the way Connecting threads have GREAT orices on thread.

The price was one of the reasons quilts of the period were made from scraps of every sort. There was no such thing as "old clothes" or "donating" clothing. Perfect example are the Quilts of Gees Bend. These ladies couldn't believe the fuss made over their quilts when they were "discovered". To them they were sewing old pieces of cloth together to keep them warm during the winter.
When people did pay 25.00 a yard for fabric, you can bet it was for a very special occasion -weddings, curtains, drapes, etc.

Do you remember a scene in Gone With the Wind? Scarlett O'Hara was wearing a dress made from velvet drapes because there was no money to buy cotton even it was available. Of course Rhett Butler showered here with lovely things from England that no one else could get. LOL
Probably more truth than poetry from those times in history.

Fabric is even higher in Australia. If you look at Kiwi quilts, fabric is about 18.80 USD per meter when you convert from the 22.50 listed on their website. So we're not doing bad.

I worked in a LQS a couple of years ago, when a gal came in to buy fabric to ship to her grandmother in Japan. She said it was cheaper to buy it here and send it back than to buy it in Japan.

And what woman in her right mind would ever target civilians to bring an end to the war? That was the tactic used by Sherman in the CW. It worked, but it certainly made life even more difficult for those defenseless civilians in the path of the Union army. It was a different method of warfare unlike any that had been used during that time, and he was criticized for what he did -- even by his fellow Northerners. It was considered to be ungentlemanly and by some critics as being inhumane. In modern times it would be similar to dropping the bombs on Japan to bring a faster end to the war (WWII) in the Pacific. Gen. Robert E. Lee is quoted as saying, "It is good that war is so terrible lest we grow too fond of it." :|
