It drops the feed dogs and Darns. Do you remember your Gramma darning socks on a lite bulb It sorta looked like she re weaved the cloth It's great for fixing small holes in jean pockets from the rivets

Above the 'Darn/Norm' button you will see the letters L M R. The thin ring on the outside of those letters is what you turn to change needle positions.

To move the lever, which changes your stitich width and is leaning to the right in the picture, you press the button on the left hand side of the lever and slide it to the left.

It could be for the feed dog but I wonder if it means straight stitch or zig zag? Interested in finding out.

It looks very similar to my circa 1975 Wizard Citation, which was sold by Western Auto and made in Japan by Brother. Mine looks a bit newer, based on the additional stiches, or it may be an upgraded model. If it'll let me, I'll attach a picture of mine.

that is an interesting machine. First I've seen one like that. I like the looks of it.
    .
I was 32 before I ever had my first sewing machine, and it was a singer with its own cabinet that cost $30. That was in 1972. I was so thrilled. I sewed and sewed on it, then got a better one (or so I thought...a portable machine) and gave mine to a daughter that never used it. YIKES

That one site with the manual is out of stock, just my luck!!
I have just entered your model no XL700 at this site: http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp06763.html and it seems they have it in stock.

BTW have you tried a squirt of oil, like WD40 on the edge of the knob, just a little.
Don't use WD40 it gets gummy. Rather use "Liquid Wrench" and just let it sit for a bit and then try to move the knob.
    Very pretty machine.
