I'm with you as a newbie. I can pick fabrics for doll clothes but quilts are different. I usually pick as Ifind the pattern. Reverse that lol find pattern then go thru stash for fabrics. No preplanning for me. That way I get my DD to offer opinions and keep her involved. She dosent quilt.

I have my bunbdles in ziplock bags in a container I have my JDI's (JUST DO IT) - it has UFO's as well as these pre-lanned quilts. That way I can grab one and jump right in.

I don't make "bundles" per se, but after getting ready to make a project from a quilt magazine and not being able to find the pattern/fabrics, I started putting the magazine, with the project marked with a Post-It, and some or all fabrics needed to make it. As several of these projects require Wonder-Under, as I trace the pattern, I add that to the large zip-lock bag as well. My girl friend introduced me to the rather large zip-lock bags you can pick up in the grocery store, so I have a small tote with these projects in them. I seldom hesitate to pull a fabric from any of those bags if it's needed for something else. For future quilts, particularly baby quilts, I tend to iron the fabrics, then put them in a shorter tote, so they are ready when I am. Heaven forbid I get any more organized than that, because then I will forget completely what I had planned to do with the fabrics.

I have been having fun making quilted totes for friends and family, so as I find fabric I think will reflect on the person I am making one for, I bundle it up and put it in a plastic bag. Right now have 5. two are only partial as I have not found what I want yet. Sometimes I put fabrics that I think will go nice in aquilt in a box, but it is placed so I can see what is in it quickly.

I have an old lovely 3-drawer chest of drawers which was given to me by a friend and which I refinished (major effort but worth it). The bottom two drawers are filled with these bundles. The top drawer which is not so deep is for miscellaneous items. I make sure to leave room in that drawer for a quick cleanup of my sewing area. Have to do a survey of my bundles periodically to see what's there and sometimes "rob" a bundle of a particular fabric if needed.
